Student choice on homework

Students who have a choice in what homework they complete can be powerful. This helps to build independence and simplifies the questions parents have. Similar to going to a restaurant, students can select from a set of activities which are beneficial to them. For example, for spelling homework students will see 9 different activities they can complete with their words. Defining, coming up with synonyms, antonyms, using a different colored pencil for every letter, translating them, are some examples of things they can do. I have introduced this idea to the 3rd grade teachers on my campus. My reasoning for this is they are complaining about work habits and the lack of homework being completed by the students.
